For an area rug to look balanced under a bed it should be large enough to extend beyond the sides of the bed at least 18 inches for a king or queen bed and at least 12 inches for a full or twin bed.
Arrange small area rug.
Too small of a rug can make any space look disconnected.
When you have more than one seating area in a space dining area living area etc you re going to need multiple rugs to get the job done.
The easiest solution is to use matching rugs.
In a small living room tuck the rug under the middle of the sofa to anchor it to the room or if it s a large space let the rug float in a central space between sofas and armchairs anchoring it with a coffee table to ensure visual harmony and connection.
In small spaces anchor your furniture using a 4 x 6 or 5 x 8 rug in the center of the area.
Give yourself anywhere from about eight to 24 inches on all sides.
Eighteen inches is the most common space but in a smaller space you can get away with as little as eight inches.
When in doubt go for the bigger rug it will unify the furniture and make the room look bigger than it is.
I reached out to designer donna mondi of donna mondi interior design for a crash course on how to combine rugs.
An area rug helps refine and define a space with warm texture.
First hang an area rug or gorgeous fabric behind your bed.
But when you have several rugs in view of one another it s important to consider how they ll look together.
Do leave equal space.
Select a rug size that fits within your furniture.
Depending upon the size of the room there can be more rug extension around the bed as seen in this room by lauren nelson design but not less which would make the rug look insignificant being covered mostly by the bed.
But the key is to find the right area rug in the right size because an area rug that is the wrong size has the opposite effect that you want it actually takes style away from the room.
They create the illusion of containment without the actual need for walls and dividers.
That s why area rugs are such a valuable asset in an open plan.
Ideally you should leave the same amount of floor space on all sides of your rug.
It also may make a small square room appear even smaller if it s too large.
In slightly larger spaces like my family room place the front legs of your furniture on top of the area rug.
